Lecture II on Virtual Spaces: From the Past to the Future

Lecture 2. Spatial Relations and Patterns (空間關係及模式)

Elements of a Pattern Language (模式語言)

Each pattern is a morphological law that establishes a set of relationships in space. In the most general form:

X -> r (A, B, ...), which means:

Within a context of type X, the parts A, B, ... are related by the relationship r.

For example: Within a gothic cathedral-> the nave is flanked on both sides by parallel lines.

or: Where a freeway meets an artery -> the access ramps of the interchange take the rough form of a clover-leaf.

Each pattern of relationships is among still other patterns of relationships. Further, each pattern in the space has a pattern of events associated with it.
