Static Versus Dynamic Contexts

  • Engineering viewpoint:

    - a discrete set of static contexts considered at the level of the knowledge representation

    - dynamical aspects are linked to time

  • Cognitive viewpoint:

    - a unique context at the level of the interaction that evolves continuously

    Implicit versus Explicit Contexts

  • Engineering viewpoint:

    - a context is explicit – structure, frame of reference

    - permits program to omit some things (e.g., donot have to say everything in a story

    [e.g., Cullingford])

  • Cognitive viewpoint:

    - both implicit and explicit contexts

    - determined by the movement of focus of attention
