Purpose:
This course introduces first year graduate students to principles of
research
methods (how to read, analyse, critique, and write papers; basic
statistics
that need to be pursued in experimental CS; ethical issues), as well as
the research being conducted in
the Computer Science Department. The course consists of a number of
modules
(see the schedule for more
information; this will updated on a regular basis, so keep checking).
All first year Ph.D. students are required to take this
course. Masters Students are welcome, since the course
is
open to all Computer Science graduate students, but it does not count
towards the MS degree.
Requirements and grading:
The students will be graded in each module independently
based on tests and/or homeworks or projects. 80% of the final
grade of a student will
depend on his/her grades in all the modules. The remaining 20%
of the grade will be based on an oral presentation
that each student will make to the class on a particular research
topic.
