This writing assignment is more open-ended than the last one. A major challenge in writing a critical essay is in paring down a broad topic and in deciding an appropriate approach to address a question. For example, in the last writing assignment, you explored the broad topic of international privacy by comparing and contrasting a concrete privacy policy in the US versus another country. For this assignment, you are unshackled from a pre-determined strategy. Along with more freedom, however, comes more potential pitfalls. Avoid tackling the problem too broadly. You will have to pare down the question further (e.g., "should Company Foo be given a patent for their method Bar?") and relate it back to the top-level question. Avoid re-inventing the wheel. Because this is a broad question, many people have explored some aspects of it. You should be aware of the different groups of opinions on this subject. On the other hand, avoid writing a survey paper. Your essay should convey your view, not just a summary of other people's idea. Your paper should again be about 1500 words.
