The Vision of Arnold Toynbee

The great British historian, Arnold Toynbee, predicted in an article written as early as 1971 that a language based upon visual symbols, i.e. icons, will become an international standard for human-to-human communication. His prediction can also be extended to human-to-machine and human-to-computer communication.

Future research issues:
  • Icon semantics
  • Visual language dictionary
  • Transcoding
  • Expert icons for various tasks
  • Visual reasoning
