Ambiguous icons are not necessarily bad. They are used in Semantic Compaction^TM systems advantageously so that multiple meanings can be expressed concisely by a small number of icons.

Recently, we exploited ambiguous icons in the design of a Visual Application Generator for the Chronobot^TM system, which is a system for time/knowledge exchange and management.
