ATM stands for Asynchronous Transfer Mode
Packets have small fixed sizes ,called cells
Cell has 5 bytes header and payload 48 bytes
ATM protocol is designed to minimize processing overhead
Why cells ?

Advantage	Reduce the queuing delay for high priority traffic
Disadvantage	Overhead because of fragmentation and reassembly
