• cluster-based storage (CBS) architecture : scalable extension of MARS architecture (fig. 10-8)
• set of independent clusters interconnected through a fast ATM switch
• ATM switch: interfaces the server with the external network
• central manager: manages the switch and co-operates with local storage managers to perform admission control
