• So the state of a Bean can be saved and later restored

• Requires that a Bean be serializable

  • Convert the object data into a stream of bits
  • Used for file storage, network communication, and IPC

• Official Bean Specification

  - A JavaBean that can’t serialize its data is not a Java Bean
