It was widely claimed that in the first presidential debate for 2012, Romney was more charismatic than Obama. The goal of this assignment is to explore whether any of the token features associated with charisma in Section 3.3 of the Rosenberg and Hirschberg (R&H) paper are also associated with charisma in a sample from this particular presidential debate.
1. Download the transcript and audio of the first 2012 presidential debate from NPR.
2. Pick pairs of 2 minute responses to two (or more) of Lehrer's questions, one where Obama goes first, and one where Romney goes first.
3. Pick two (or more) of the predictive Lexico-Syntactic featues from the R&H paper, compute its value for each of your Obama and Romney responses, and see whether the values are correctly associated with charisma.
4. Pick two (or more) of the predictive Acoustic-Prosodic features from the R&H paper, use Praat to compute its value for the audio associated with your Obama and Romney responses, and again see whether the feature values are correctly associated with debate charisma.
5. Discuss your results.
